INTRODUCTION:

"When a person coughs or sneezes, the droplets that contain the virus can also fall on the surfaces located nearby such as the surface of the table, seats, stairs, railings, escalators, and walls of the lift1

"However the respiratory secretions of those who coughed or sneezed will not go far away from that particular person, only to about one meter away or less. But the secretions can infect others who are located closer from this distance (one meter) with the virus."2

"Cleanliness in hospitals also plays an important role in the control of infections.

But do the healthcare personnel have enough facilities to clean (wash) their hands?"

Hand washing for hand hygiene is the act of cleaning the hands with water or another liquid, with the use of soap, for the purpose of removing soil, dirt and, or microorganisms.3

The surgical hand hygiene aims to remove dirt, oils and bacteria from the hands and forearms of operating personnel. It should kill transient bacteria and have a prolonged depressant effect on the resident bacteria and should not irritate skin or be time consuming.4

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Hand hygiene is a complex issue nowadays. There are about 5378 articles of initial key word about hand hygiene that had been studied. Despite of many proven studies, the hand hygiene compliance is still low in the field of health care setting. The surgical hand hygiene aims to remove dirt, oils and bacteria from the hands and forearms of operating personnel. It should kill transient bacteria and have a prolonged depressant effect on the resident bacteria and should not irritate skin or be time consuming. Brushes and nail cleaners are commonly used with one of the antiseptics mentioned earlier. Brushes should be soft enough to not damage skin, but still achieve the expected result, and it should be remembered that excessive use of the surgical scrub process may result in skin damage and dermatitis.5

It is important that their knowledge of staff nurses regarding hand hygiene will be help to reduce infection and provide essential care to the client before and after procedure. Good hand hygiene technique is useful in hospital and community also. Particularly in Operation Theater it will be necessary for patient survival the main purpose of this research is to identify the improper technique for surgical hand washing, and as well as guideline of why hand hygiene is important and right technique of surgical hand washing and hand hygiene.
